Vision Screening Recommendations for Children
The goal of vision testing is to identify and address vision problems as early as possible. Previously, diagnosis relied on the doctor's examination and parental observations. In recent years, there have been significant advances in vision testing for young children, allowing the identification and treatment of issues in children as young as 12 months old.
Just like any screening exam, these tests are designed to be sensitive enough to detect any problem, which can sometimes result in a false positive. We will refer you to an ophthalmologist (an eye doctor) for a more comprehensive diagnosis. Your doctor will always conduct a thorough eye examination at each well visit.
For ages 12 months to 4 years: Spot Vision (annually)
For ages 4 years and older: Snellen eye chart and Spot Vision if necessary
